Starting Earth Day 2011
Here's how it works: For each
full-sized grocery bag that the Co-op doesn't use, because
you provided your own bag, you contribute a credit to a
community project or organization. A new recipient is
selected for a six month period from Earth Day to October
then October to Earth Day. We were happy to support the Ryan
Street Community Garden (ryanstreetgarden.blogspot.com)
in Hancock with our first donation.
Our second donation ending this Earth Day 2012 will go to
the Barbara Kettle
Gundlach Shelter Home (bkgshelterhome.org).
For the upcoming 6 months starting the day after Earth Day
and voted by the Owner-Members attending the Annual Meeting
is the Cooper Country Community Arts Center (coppercountryarts.com).
Beginning in October 2012 the Keweenaw Land Trust (keweenawlandtrust.org)
will be the 4th recipient of this campaign, also voted for
at the Annual Meeting.
The Bring-a-Bag Campaign was
launched on Earth Day, April 22, 2011. The campaign is the
Co-op's way to give back to the community based on shoppers
use of their own sustainable shopping bags instead of the
use of plastic or paper bags at the cost of the Co-op. The
fund builds on credits for each bag saved. At the end of
each time period that revenue is awarded as a donation to a
local organization or project that meets the *selection
criteria. The Member-Owners will vote on 2 applicants at the
Annual Meeting every year in the Spring. If you know of a
organization that fits the criteria of this campaign have
them fill out the application provided here. (*See
application for selection criteria.)
