National Fresh Squeezed Juice Day (RECIPES)

A quick meal, a snack, a dessert, or a way to get your vitamins --- fresh squeezed juice can play all of these roles. Also known as cold-pressed juice, it can be made pretty cheaply at home, with many different appliances, such as a squeezer, blender, juice extractor, or an old-fashioned hand crank juicer. It can also be purchased at places such as a juice bar (Keweenaw Co-op has the only "JUICER" in the Copper Country).

Drinking fresh-squeezed juice is an easy way to get the recommended servings of fruits and vegetables, something that most people usually don't do. The juice can easily be absorbed because it is already broken down into a digestible form; the body can use it in 30 minutes, instead of the two hours that it would take for whole fruit. Antioxidants in the juice can fight free radicals that cause diseases and can help with hydration, which assists in many daily processes.

Specific types of juices can aid the body in different ways. Citrus juice can fight kidney stones, while cherry juice can take on gout. Tomato juice is filled with lycopene that fights cancer, while cranberry juice combats urinary tract infections. If a few different fruits or vegetables are used to make a juice, a wider array of nutrients are taken in.

Freshly squeezed juice does have some natural sugars but doesn't have all the added sugar and sweeteners that processed juices may have, which are empty calories. Nor does freshly squeezed juice have corn syrup or food coloring. There are some drawbacks from not eating whole fruit, such as juice having less fiber and a higher glycemic index. Juice also doesn't keep you as full as solid food, so people also run the risk of adding on calories. Still, freshly squeezed juice can be beneficial, so today is a great day to drink it!

National Fresh Squeezed Juice Day is observed next on Tuesday, January 15th, 2019. It has always been observed annually on January 15th.
