We’re happy to introduce Amber. Owner of G&A Garden Center in Houghton, Michigan Tech alum, and immigrant from eastern China, Amber loves the Keweenaw for its safety and community. At Michigan Tech, Amber fell in love with her husband, Gary, and settled to start a family in the Keweenaw.
"The people are so friendly. The community helps each other. There seems to be less impact by the crazy world!” says Amber.
Amber’s favorite part of gardening is weeding (yes, really!) because she loves the feeling of clean when it’s done. Secondly, Amber loves when people stop by her garden to choose the perfect plant.
“That’s very satisfying. They say, ‘Oh, I want that one!’ I say, ‘Okay, I’ll dig it out for you!’ It’s like a fast food place,” she describes.
Lastly, Amber loves the time of year when everything blooms, especially her flowers. Her garden and greenhouse feature veggies, herbs, annuals, shrubs, trees, and more. A true herbalist at heart, Amber offers six different types of basil and recommends lemon balm for a mood lift and Thai basil for noodles (with garlic).
Amber is proud to mentor other immigrants in the art of plant cultivation, including farmhand Ian from Brazil.
“To be able to help people like that is an honor,” says Amber.
At the Co-op, we always look forward to seeing Amber when she drops off her specialty herbs and heirloom cherry tomatoes. Amber has an infectious joy, and we hope it transfers to your meal.
